Desert Hot Springs
Desert Hot Springs is a town just north of Downtown Palm Springs, still within the geographic area of the Coachella Valley. The city is often dubbed the “Spa City” because it has some of the best mineral hot springs found anywhere in the world.
The city is one of the few places in the world with naturally occurring hot and cold mineral springs. Its water source comes from the melting snow of Mount San Gorgonio, the highest peak in Southern California.
As the snow melts, it slowly drips down to the earth for 7 years down the mountain via the Mission Creek Branch of the San Andreas Fault. The branch will bisect the area and on one side is the cold water aquifer and on the other, is to the Desert Hot Springs aquifer.
Natural hot mineral water from the Desert Hot Springs Aquifer has gained international recognition as healing mineral water. Geothermal forces thousands of feet below the earth’s surface naturally increase water temperatures from 95 degrees to extremely hot temperatures as high as 180 degrees.
The hottest mineral aquifers are located in an area of the Desert Hot Springs town called Miracle Hill. This area spanning only 4 small blocks is the hottest and richest source of mineral water in southern California.
Nonetheless, the area has produced hot mineral waters with healing benefits for decades. And the region is also home to a small number of highly rated resort spas.
Mineral Spring Water
The history of the mineral springs of the Desert Hot Springs began when Cabot Yerxa discovered them in 1913. Cabot Yerxa is one of three people who are considered to be the founders of the city of Desert Hot Springs.
He is an adventurer, having lived throughout the United States and traveled the world. Cabot is also often referred to as “Mr. Desert Hot Springs.”
Because he arrived in the Coachella Valley in October 1913 when he was 30 years old and He found hot mineral water right outside his door while digging a well. Even he also found a pure cold water from the Mission Springs Aquifer while digging another well.
Cabot named his guesthouse Miracle Hill because it has two wells, one hot and one cold. He built the Pueblo on its site in 1941 and worked in this house and museum until his death in 1965.
In 2020, a Berkley Springs International Water Tasting Contest awarded Desert Hot Springs the TBEST TASTING MUNICIPAL WATER IN THE WORLD. The award makes it the most decorated city in history because of its extraordinary water.
The internationally recognized mineral water source travels for seven years to reach the aquifer beneath the city. Then the spa resort dispenses the earth’s liquid treasures through wells.
The hottest mineral water sources in Desert Hot Springs are known to be within a radius of 6 to 8 small blocks, the area is known as Miracle Hill. The area is home to some of the best spas in town and home to the Pueblo Cabot Yerxa Museum.
